The ancient Egyptians were among many civilizations who knew that “the eyes are a window into your soul.” One of your first features others will notice is your eyes. They speak long before you have made any kind of introduction. Egyptians ground various pigments to create colourful eye makeup, which was worn by both men and women. Although fashion trends change from year to year, you can still find a look for your eyes that remains current no matter what. Here are some of the basic pointers to help you make the most of your eyes year after year.

In a previous “ Looking Fab” article we covered the importance of well-groomed eyebrows. Once your eyebrows are in place, it is much easier to define your eyes. To do this you will need either a pencil, liquid or a gel eyeliner.

Most complexions look best if they wear eyeliner in black. If your skin is very light you can use a dark brown eyeliner for more subtle definition.  To steady your hand, place your elbow on a table. Hold your eyepencil or liner with your dominant hand. Now use the other hand to gently pull open your eyes, using your thumb and forefinger.  Trace around your lower waterline first, then fill in your upper lashline until you feel the colour is strong enough. Unless you have wide-set eyes, don’t line the entire lower lid. Instead, stop halfway across. If you’re using a pencil, smudge the line with your finger so it looks more natural. Gently brush mascara onto your lashes as this will help set the eyeliner. If you have made any mistakes, you can use a cotton bud dipped in some eye-makeup remover to erase and start over. Practice makes perfect.

As you progress in skill, you may use a liquid eye-liner to achieve more intense and longer-lasting colour. These are available in virtually all the colours of the rainbow. To create a cat’s eye using liquid liner holding the skin of your upper lid taut, then swiftly draw the liquid liner along the upper lash line as close to the lashes as possible. Apply line from corner to corner of eye, extending the line upward at the outer corner of eye. If using cream eye-liner, be sure to clean your brush regularly and to avoid sharing. Eyes are prone to infections so your mascara should be out of bounds. Sharing eye-pencil is fine as long as you sharpen and disinfect before each use. Replace your mascara after every three months to prevent it from becoming a breeding ground for bacteria.

Take your time, be gentle and to pay close attention when lining your eyes. Avoid pulling or tugging at the delicate skin around the eyes. Use good-quality, well sharpened eye-pencils to avoid any accidentally damage. If you start with foundation and some eye-shadow, your eyeliner will stay in look more polished and stay in place longer. Still, eyeliner on its own is fine for a more informal look, although the more advanced possibilities with eye-makeup are endless. Enhancing your eyes is a great way to look sophisticated, grown and sexy.
